Reader thinks article not up to standards
To the Journal editor:
I am writing regarding an article published in the Mining Journal on Thursday, January 9 written by Garrett Neese of the Houghton Daily Mining Gazette. The article was covering the Town Hall meeting held in Houghton the previous evening by US Representative Jack Bergman. Representative Bergman was asked “if he agreed with Trump’s actions regarding the Ukraine and if it would be beneficial to the U.S.. Bergman laid out his reasoning for his vote.” The first article (in his opinion) “didn’t rise to the level of impeachment” and the second- obstruction of Congress — he called “almost laughable.” The story then immediately goes on to change the subject (Mr. Neese or Mr. Bergman) criticizing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
To me it is poor reporting to accept such an answer and to report it without following up on the reason Mr. Bergman found the second article “almost laughable.” To me, refusing to allow witnesses subpoenaed to appear before a co-equal branch of government is anything but “laughable.” I don’t care if there is disagreement, but I do care if reporting is lax. I don’t feel that this reporting meets the level of journalism I expect from The Mining Journal.
Sincerely,
ALAN REYNOLDS
