To the Journal editor:

We want to thank The Mining Journal and Staff Writer Lisa Bowers for their thorough and balanced coverage of the Michigamme Pocket Park controversy. We would also like to express our appreciation for The Mining Journal’s editorial supporting keeping the Pocket Park in public hands.

To clarify, no public funds have been spent on the campaign to save the Pocket Park. While the Michigamme DDA has taken a position on the adverse economic impact of the proposed loss of this public access to Lake Michigamme, the DDA does not fund the defense of the Pocket Park.

Some members of the Michigamme DDA, fire department, etc., are part of the “Save Our Pocket Park” group but they are participating as individual taxpayers, businesses, and residents. The defense of the Pocket Park is 100% privately funded.
