Media misquoted president

To the Journal editor:

I am writing in response to Doug Mills’ letter to the editor, published in the Sunday, July 28 Mining Journal. Mr. Mills takes issue with U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman’s opposition to a resolution condemning President Trump’s latest “tweets” which he characterizes as racist, misogynistic ravings. In the interest of fairness and honesty, I am providing the direct quote from President Trump which is vastly different than what was reported by AP.

“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to run.”

“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”

He added: “These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements.”

The president’s words may have been inartful, but they were not racist or misogynistic. I don’t believe anyone would characterize any of the members of the “Squad” as proud Americans. Perhaps Mr. Bergman read President Trump’s actual words rather than relying the liberal media #fakenews outlets version before casting his vote.

Mr. Bergman served our country honorably as a member of the military, and continues to serve the constituents of his district diligently. If Mr. Mills is so offended by Mr. Bergman’s newsletter, I suggest he “unsubscribe.” It’s not hard to do. Respectfully,

CASEY KREPPS
