Whitmer on track

To the Journal editor:

I appreciate that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has tried through negotiations to resolve the risk of a Line 5 oil spill at the Straits of Mackinac, but I’m not surprised that negotiations have gone poorly.

I’ve had personal interactions with Enbridge following their devastating oil spill in the Kalamazoo River and found them to be very difficult to work with.

As the owner of a brewery in Escanaba that relies on clean water, I applaud the governor for taking steps to protect our Great Lakes and find clean energy solutions for the people of the Upper Peninsula by creating a U.P. Energy Task Force.

Further, I strongly encourage her to not get distracted by the possibility of a tunnel, and move swiftly to revoke Enbridge’s easement in the Straits and begin the process of protecting Michigan business interests by protecting the clean freshwater we all enjoy.

It’s time we invest in clean, renewable energy infrastructure across our state rather than continue to support a Canadian pipeline company that is using Michigan as a shortcut to move western Canadian oil to eastern Canada.

By finding an alternate solution for the U.P.’s propane supply, we can finally shut down this massve risk to Michigan’s economy.
