Hands-free cell phone use when driving

To the Journal editor:

With about 18 states and territories having passed laws mandating the use of “hands-free” cell phones while driving, it is time for Michigan to do the same. Many times this week I have seen people driving using only one hand with the other hand holding a cell phone while talking on it. Their driving leaves much to be desired.

The snowy and icy road conditions are hard enough to negotiate safely using one’s full attention and both hands (Note the number of accidents on highway 41 alone), without so many drivers attempting this with only half of their hands and half of their attention being used.

I say “Pass a law requiring hands-free cell phone use only.”
