Vets not overlooked

To the Journal editor:

This letter is to recognize the one year anniversary of the dedication of the Republic Townships’ Veterans Memorial (Oct. 22).

This memorial was originally the vision of Sterling Schultz, brought to and followed up by the Veterans Committee and the Republic VFW, and all of us who had donated to it.

As one who had served during the Cold War Era, I am so thankful and honored that Mr. Schultz had truly listened to my concerns that we too would have our place on this memorial and we could get our long overdue recognition, I mailed him all the information I had on the Cold War and it’s combat casualties (382) and of its MIA’s (126) who are still classified as such.

Mr. Schultz was true to his word, he put us up on it as the Cold War Era. This is the only memorial that I can think of that has the designation “The Cold War” and which honors those of us brothers and sisters from Republic who had served this great Country of ours when it wasn’t so popular to be in the military.

I was passing through Republic at the end of May on my motorcycle, and stopped by and seen the memorial, a lot of feelings welled up inside, but two really stuck out, and one was great sense of pride and thanks again Sterling, a job well done!

Sincerely,
