This is a time to reflect on our nation

To the Journal editor:

Well, President Trump has one thing right-the country is being “infested.”.What he got wrong, however, is the exact nature of this infestation. All of Trump’s tweets, speeches, and actions lead us to believe the invasion is a swarm of non-white, non-Christian immigrants when in fact, what is really assaulting our nation is the disease of racial and religious bigotry, accelerated by an unhealthy dose of incivility.

We should all worry about our nation and the future of our democracy. Are citizens repulsed by this onslaught on the Bill of Rights? Or are people simply acknowledging their own racial and religious animus by continuing to support this president and his congressional enablers? The upcoming mid-term elections will prove to be an important indicator. All elections have consequences, but this one especially so.

As Independence Day is observed, it’s time for us to reflect on the guiding principles present in the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution that have made this country great for over 200 years. We learned about them as children in grade school.

I pray that we haven’t forgotten about them as adults.
