Supporting township road millage

To the Journal editor:

The Negaunee Township Board has put considerable effort into a plan to repair and maintain all roads in the township that are the township’s responsibility.

By hiring a professional engineering firm, we have been able to rate which roads need immediate attention, which need chip sealing and which are in need of crack sealing.

Roads that are receiving the greatest amount of use are usually in the worst or roughest shape. And, of the 31 miles of township roads, approximately 9 miles need attention within the next two years or they will deteriorate to the point of needing a full rebuild.

The Negaunee Township Board has placed a millage question on the Nov. 7 ballot that asks the township voters to accept a millage increase of 1.55 mills for 15 years. This money will be used to purchase a municipal bond to repair the roads that need to be brought back to a good to excellent standard.

This money will be used to deal with the road surface only except for some minor brushing and right-of-way work. It will not be used for curve realignment or elevation changes.

The township board, and the vehicles you drive, ask that you give consideration to a yes vote on this matter.
