Safety foremost

To the Journal editor:

Recently, The Mining Journal published an editorial concerning potential hazards to those who use Marquette’s waterfront. Their comments were spot-on.

As summer approaches, it’s critical that everyone using our beaches and lakes take the time to understand what precautions will lead to an enjoyable experience.

The city of Marquette has worked hard to identify safe swimming locations, provide lifeguards and safety equipment at popular beaches and maintain robust emergency response systems.

However, these efforts pale in comparison to what individuals can do to prevent fun from turning to tragedy. There’s no substitute for knowing how to swim and taking the time to become knowledgeable about weather conditions and local hazards such as rip and long-shore currents.

Safety begins with each of us and it only takes a few moments to check the weather and flag warnings before venturing into open water. Fortunately, our local media makes this process easier through frequent weather forecasts and waterfront hazard warnings.

The Mining Journal also reminds us daily to check for beach warnings with a safety banner on its front page. Additionally, the city of Marquette’s website provides quick access to a wealth of information for people wanting to enjoy a day at the beach.

Take a safety break this summer and stay informed. It could literally save someone’s life
