People have power

To the Journal editor:

I don’t get it. Our Congress passed the $1.1 trillion funding bill that not one of our representatives had read, let alone thoughtfully considered in its entirety. The bill was 1,600 pages and contained numerous attachments. Any bill this huge is humanly impossible to read, thoughtfully consider, and critically debate in its entirety, before finally voting.

Our slide into voting by guess birthed us Obamacare. “You have to pass it to find out what is in it,” Pelosi said. Do you feel powerless? I understand. None of us can control what Congress does.

We are not powerless! We elected them, that is, we hired them to represent us and they need us to elect them again if they want to continue to feed from that bucket.

If we do not like what they are doing, we need to let them know. It only takes 5 minutes to call all three of our Congressional reps to tell them briefly and politely what is on our minds.

Letting them know we expect them to not vote on any measure they had not read and thoughtfully considered will not take long. Requesting they refuse as a group, to vote on anything so convoluted as a several hundred page bill on anything, could also be brief.

It might not change the past, but it may influence the future: the more of us who call, the greater the influence. Consider calling once a week. Program phone numbers into your cell phone for convenience.

Investing five minutes a week to help stabilize our government and cast a light in the right direction may bear good fruit. We are not stupid! Clearly, our reps need social support to do the responsible thing. Let’s do it. Brief. Polite. Let’s go!
