Bottom line watched

To the Journal editor:

Genetically modified organisms have been in our food supply for nearly twenty years with no documented health effects.

Yet anti-GMO activists continue to push labeling initiatives on states around the country, including here in Michigan. They seem intent on foisting misleading, inaccurate and incomplete information on unsuspecting American shoppers.

These state labeling laws are ill-conceived. They provide grocery shoppers with misleading, inconsistent and inaccurate information.

What’s labeled a GMO in one state may not be in another. In Vermont, food manufacturers will have to choose between three different labels.

That’s madness. And it will lead to significantly higher food prices – $500 per family per year according to a Cornell University study.

Food labeling should be handled on the federal level with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ensuring food safety.

Congress must act to ensure sure that food prices don’t spike as a result of the extreme political agendas of anti-GMO activists. Michigan’s economy is starting to come back.

We cannot afford a needlessly inflicted blow in the form of higher food bills. I hope our representatives in Congress will lead on this issue.

Michiganders will notice.
