Wildcat swimmers gain split

MARQUETTE – A double-dual at the PEIF Pool Saturday saw the Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team settling for a split.

Coach Heidi Voigt’s Wildcats lost 157-143 to Grand Valley State and beat St. Cloud (Minnesota) State, 186-114.

Northern took wins in eight events while placing second in five.

Seniors Debbi Lawrence and Madisen Sechena each claimed two individual wins to lead the Wildcats. NMU also broke a pool record in the 400 medley relay.

Lawrence captured individual victories in the 200 freestyle (1:53.52) and the 50 free (23.91).

She also swam the final legs of the winning 400 medley (3:54.62) and 400 freestyle (3:34.32) relays.

Sechena swam to victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.46) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.11,) along with swimming the second leg of the 400 medley relay.

NMU senior Jordan Iverson swam a personal-best 2:10.94 in the 200 butterfly to win the event.

Also setting a personal-best was junior Crystal Bennet in the 100 butterfly (57.83).

NMU’s record-setting team in the 400 medley relay was senior Emily Bourguignon, Sechena, Bennet and Lawrence, combining for a time of 3:54.62.
