Kipling efforts noted

To the Journal editor:

For the past 11 years, Kurt Kipling has taken a week of his personal vacation to bring the Skerbeck Carnival to downtown Ishpeming. Several months before its arrival, Kurt is busy getting the posters and banners printed, the advertising, and the city permits in place.

When the carnival arrives he’s there to help them with their set-up. While the carnival is in town, he takes care of crowd control, sweeps up litter, thanks people for attending, and then he helps with the tear down when it’s time for them to leave.

This year I took my nieces to the carnival. While we were riding the ferris wheel, eating cotton candy, Ava and Bria said, “This is like being in heaven.”

Kurt spends countless hours and five vacation days working and his only compensation is the smiles on the faces of the kids who are having so much fun. This year the Skerbeck’s gave the Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department at check for $2,723.60 and a check for the same amount to Bay Cliff Health Camp. Over the past years our Fire Chief, Ed Anderson figures that Kurt has raised more than $35,000 for them, and the same for Bay Cliff. That’s more than $70,000.

Thank you Kurt for bringing people from all over Marquette County to our city. You keep Ishpeming rockin’!
