Teachers supported

To the Journal editor:

We will no longer be subscribing to The Mining Journal, due to your coverage of the MAPS teacher contracts.

I am a teacher and I have come from a long line of teachers (four generations now and counting). I have seen teaching families struggle for years because of the amount of pay received. My family, when I was young, was on food stamps.

We have consistently conceded to lower pay so that our insurance benefits would remain good and beneficial to working families. Now, the state has taken our ability to bargain for those benefits (pay 20 percent or have a hard cap) and it is much more difficult to bargain in general.

Marquette teachers deserve steps and lanes and a reasonable pay raise. In future years, you are going to find a large lack of good teachers. They are not going to be able to support their families.

With so much riding on education, this community and The Mining Journal need to get behind the Marquette teachers.
