Ski/Shoe a success

To the Journal editor:

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who donated, sponsored, or came out to the second annual Ski and Shoe for the Cure event on March 15. Ski and Shoe is a non-competitive 5k ski and 2k snowshoe event followed by lunch, a raffle, and silent auction.

All proceeds from the event go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is a life threatening genetic disorder. It causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs causing frequent infections, lung scarring and eventually lung failure.

It also builds up in the pancreas causing the body’s natural enzymes which aid in digestion to be blocked. People with this disease can also suffer from cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, arthritis, liver problems, heart problems, and more.

This year’s event raised over $8,000 for cystic fibrosis, and we are still getting more donations in! In the two years we have held the event, almost $18,000 has been raised for cystic fibrosis.

The support and generosity of the community in the Upper Peninsula will never cease to astound me. As a 19-year-old college student planning and organizing this event, I never expected the response I would get from the community.

I am very proud and honored to be a “Yooper Girl” and to be able to live in an area where the people genuinely care so much for one another.

Save the date. The third annual Ski and Shoe for the Cure event will be held next year on Saturday, March 7th, 2015.

Thank you to everyone, once again, for your support of my fundraiser and my quest to help find a cure for this disease.
