Agency needs help

To the Journal editor:

The Marquette Corps of the Salvation Army would like to express our sincere gratitude to the many individuals, families, churches, service groups and businesses who donated generously during the past several months to help us serve less fortunate persons in our community.

Because of your gifts the Salvation Army was able to help brighten Christmas for several hundred families and individuals struggling to meet their daily needs.

While the Salvation Army fills a prominent role during the Christmas season, we also continue to provide direly needed assistance throughout the year.

For example, during the short month of February, we served 1,523 noon meals at our Daily Bread Program at our Baraga Avenue facility, provided utility assistance to approximately 38 families, and were able to assist 101 hungry families consisting of 279 individuals from our food pantry.

The harsh winter, cold temperatures and economic factors have resulted in reduced donations, but at the same time, an even greater need in our service area than we are accustomed to seeing. As a result, our resources and food pantry are reaching unprecedented low levels.

Please consider a monetary or donation of food in any amount to the Marquette corps of the Salvation Army to help us continue to meet these urgent needs. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated by those we serve.
