To the Journal editor:

We don’t care if your suggestion makes more sense than anything else that’s been presented. We simply can’t accept it as a solution because it wouldn’t be consistent with our current policies and procedures.

What? Yes, of course the majority of our members have reviewed your assessment, however we cannot violate, or even consider changing those sacred and nonsensical rules that have been established.

How many times, and in how many places have we heard about, observed or experienced this scenario played out? It’s painfully obvious that common sense is increasingly taking a back seat to what many misguided people would consider intelligent decision making.

And what makes it even worse is the fact that many of these “decision-makers” are too incompetent, or simply too arrogant to realize or admit to their shortcomings.

“Conformity.” “Compliance.” “Zero-Tolerance.” The list could go on and on. And that’s a frightening thought. Where does it end? It’s getting to the point where people aren’t allowed to think for themselves because the rule-makers are thinking for them.

They’re dictating to the masses what is or isn’t safe, acceptable or, can I even say it, what’s politically correct. Is this what human beings truly want to be subjected to throughout the duration of their lives? I certainly hope not.

Am I suggesting that we all turn to anarchy as the answer? Of course not. Should we step back and take a second look at some of the directions we’re traveling in?

Absolutely. We were given the gift of intelligence, and with that, the ability to make reasoned decisions based on what we feel is best for us.

Do we really want to deprive ourselves of that gift by increasingly succumbing to those who think they know better what’s best for us?
