Approval of labor contract is step in right direction

By Journal Editorial Board 2 min read

The approval of a one-year labor contract between the university and Local UAW 2178, which represents the university's Administrative Professional union, is a positive step toward supporting employees and maintaining a productive workplace. Following union ratification on Sept. 30, the agreement, effective Oct. 1, demonstrates the value of cooperation and compromise between university leadership and its employees.

The contract includes a 2 percent increase in annual base wages and a one-time payment equal to 1 percent of base wages. While these increases may not resolve every financial concern employees face, they represent a meaningful effort to recognize the contributions of administrative professionals who help keep the university operating effectively. Fair compensation is essential to attracting and retaining qualified employees and ensuring the institution can continue to serve its students and community.

Equally important are the changes to the grievance process, which add mediation steps to help address workplace disputes. Providing additional opportunities for employees and university administration to resolve disagreements constructively can encourage communication, reduce conflict and foster a healthier working environment. A strong labor relationship depends not only on wages but also on fairness, transparency and mutual respect.

The updated leave language, designed to comply with Michigan's Earned Sick Time Act, is another important component of the agreement. Clear and compliant leave policies help protect employees' rights while ensuring the university follows state law. Employees should not have to choose between protecting their health and meeting their workplace responsibilities.

Although this is a one-year agreement, its approval provides an opportunity for both sides to build trust and continue working toward shared goals. University employees deserve recognition for their work, and the institution benefits when its workforce feels valued and treated fairly.

Approving this contract is therefore a reasonable and constructive decision. The agreement offers wage improvements, strengthens dispute-resolution procedures and updates employee leave provisions. Just as importantly, it reinforces the principle that a successful university depends on a cooperative relationship between its administration and the people who carry out its mission every day.
