A safe, functional place to stay is one of the most basic needs any community can help provide. That is why the renovation underway at Room at the Inn in downtown Marquette deserves the community's support.
The shelter, located at 447 W. Washington St., serves 46 people each night. With a waiting list of about 20 people, the need for its services is clear. Making sure the building can continue to serve those residents safely and effectively is not simply a matter of improving a structure, it is an investment in the people who depend on it.
The renovation is fairlt extensive. Work includes replacing deteriorated facade brick, repairing and improving the shelter's signage, upgrading the electrical system, replacing windows, improving the boiler and upgrading the showers. The building's awning was removed in 2025 as an initial part of the project.
These improvements address both the appearance and, more importantly, the functionality of a building that provides essential shelter. A reliable heating system, modern electrical infrastructure, accessible accommodations and improved showers are not luxuries in a homeless shelter. They are basic components of a safe and dignified environment.
The project is also an example of how public resources can be put to practical use. A $100,000 Marquette County grant, funded through federal pandemic-era assistance, is supporting the work. Another $72,000 from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority is helping fund the improvements.
The renovation will not solve homelessness in Marquette County, nor should it be viewed as a substitute for addressing the underlying causes of housing insecurity. But communities need both long-term solutions and places where people can find safety and shelter today.
Room at the Inn provides that immediate resource.
