Firearm deer season much more than venison quest

The Michigan firearms deer hunting season starts at dawn Saturday morning. Tonight, a lot of folks will be as excited as children on Christmas Eve, waiting for the chance to get out in the woods in pursuit of an elusive whitetail.

While difficult winters have thinned the Upper Peninsula herd, we know hunters are going to work hard for the chance to bag a buck.

Non-hunters may not understand the thrill hunters feel when successful, but these non-hunters should also remember the deer harvested will stock freezers to feed many local families during the long winter ahead.

Tradition is a big part of hunting season in the Upper Peninsula. Generations get together for the deer camp experience, sharing memories of previous seasons and of hunters who are no longer with us. Fifty years ago, it wasn’t the case, but today women, too, have joined the hunting club and enjoy a chance to bring home a trophy deer.

And don’t forget the local economy receives a much welcome boost from hunters visiting the area who buy groceries, gas and supplies while they’re here.

We realize hunting is not an avocation for everyone, but we believe it has an important place, not just in Yooper history, but in our present and future. Good luck to all hunters. Please be smart and safe while you’re out in the woods and enjoy this extra season of the U.P. calendar, one that lasts until Nov. 30.

Starting at $3.23/week.
