Welcome back, NMU!
We are pleased to report that the greater Marquette area has a nice hum early this week as Northern Michigan University students have returned to campus.
NMU Interim President Gavin Leach delivered the fall convocation last week. Many students have moved into residence halls and off-campus dwellings, classes are being held and students are everywhere — and that’s a good thing.
Some people might complain about the increased traffic and only an occasional loud gathering, but for the most part, the community should be pleased the students are back. They add to the local economy by buying food, clothes and other necessities plus they attend a variety of entertainment and sporting events. Of course, they’re studying to advance their careers and, it is hoped, make significant contributions to whatever part of the world they move after graduation.
And don’t forget students volunteer in the area, such as participating in the annual Make A Difference Day in which student organizations rake yards throughout the day.
In other words, NMU students are an important part of our community.
Monday marked the first day of classes as well as the annual Fall Fest, where students had the chance to learn about the various organizations and departments on campus, as well as volunteer agencies and local businesses in the area.
We believe that NMU students add a certain vibrancy to the community. Because the annual influx typically involves people in the 18- to 22-year-old group, college towns tend to stay young at heart.
And for that, we are glad. The city of Marquette and surrounding area has a lot to offer its residents and NMU students play an important role in making the community so appealing.
