Protect your home while you’re away
As summer winds down, many Americans are making the most of those final vacation days, while often leaving their homes unoccupied for days or weeks. Such absences can make homes vulnerable to potential damage or theft.
“If your home is not secured or properly maintained, problems like water leaks, electrical issues or even break-ins could arise,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group. “By following some simple precautions, homeowners can enjoy their vacations with confidence, knowing their property is protected.”
Tips to Protect Your Home While Away in the Summer
Safety & Security:
• Lock all doors and windows, including basement and garage entries
• Test locks ahead of time to ensure they’re working properly
• Adjust blinds and shades to maintain privacy while still appearing lived-in
• Securely store valuables like jewelry, documents and other items in a home safe or off-site safe-deposit box
• Set your lights on a timer so it appears that someone is home
• Check your alarm system. Make sure it’s functioning correctly and notify your alarm company that you will be away
Interior Hazard Prevention
• Shut off the water supply either at the main valve or to individual lines for toilets, sinks and appliances to reduce the flooding risk from burst pipes
• Unplug non-essential electronics to cut down on energy waste and guard against power surges during summer storms
• Adjust the thermostat to conserve energy while keeping indoor temperatures stable
• Clear out perishables like fruits, vegetables and dairy that could spoil while you’re gone
• Take out the trash to prevent odors or unwanted pests
• Select a trusted neighbor or family member to routinely check your home for any issues
Exterior Protection
• Trash duty backup: Ask a neighbor or family member to handle curbside bins on collection day and return them afterward
• Block animal entry points: Look for gaps, holes or weak spots and seal them to keep pests out
• Maintain your lawn: Hire a lawn care service or arrange for someone to mow and water during longer trips
• Clear gutters: Remove debris to ensure proper drainage and avoid potential water damage from summer storms
• Close the chimney flue: Helps prevent drafts, moisture, or curious critters from sneaking in
Final Prep: Little Things That Make a Big Difference
• Keep travel plans off social media to reduce the risk of theft or unwanted attention
• Arrange care for pets well in advance so they’re safe and comfortable while you’re away
• Hold your mail and newspapers through the post office, or ask a trusted neighbor to collect them daily
• Clean your home thoroughly before leaving — it’s more inviting when you return and helps deter pests
• Notify your bank of your travel dates to avoid your cards being flagged or frozen for suspicious activity
