Drivers must be extra cautious with local schools starting
Local schools are going to be starting soon and we urge drivers on local roadways to exercise additional caution and care when motoring.
That’s because, of course, children by the score are going to be out and about and in places they haven’t been during the summer months. It can be a recipe for tragedy unless drivers think through what they are doing behind the wheel and really pay attention.
Those first days back to class are a busy and exciting time. And students themselves, especially younger ones, may need reminders about how to stay safe on their way to school. But we believe it’s up to drivers to be aware, especially during those times when children may be waiting for, getting on, or departing from the school bus or walking or biking home from school.
Most of the children who lose their lives in a school bus related incident are 4 to 7 years old – when they are walking, experts said.
As rare as school bus crashes are, they can happen, and sometimes they end tragically.
So what can drivers do to ensure the community’s children remain safe? Most importantly, be aware of school zones keep an eye on the road at all times. We often drive through these areas without realizing that we may encounter small children.
Next, obey the speed limit signs in school zones, as well as the directions of school crossing guards. Buses often have a difficult time navigating the increase in traffic during the mornings and afternoons in school zones. Drivers should yield right of way to buses whenever possible.
Motorists must stop 20 feet from the bus when its stop sign is deployed, or its red lights are flashing. People who pass a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing are responsible for a civil infraction and a fine between $100 and $500. That fine is doubled if the stopped bus is in a school zone, according to the Michigan State Police website.
Bottom line: it’s always important to obey the rules of the road and be respectful of others with whom we share it. During the first weeks of school, it is important that drivers are vigilant, especially when driving in school zones or when they encounter school buses. Drivers who focus on the act of driving and their surroundings save lives.
Period.
