November contests set; key races competitive for a change

The stage is now set for the Nov. 5 General Election after Michigan voters hit the polls on Tuesday to narrow down candidates for several local and statewide seats.

At the statewide level, former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers has secured the Republican nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan and will face Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who will hope to keep one of Michigan’s Senate set in the Democratic column after the long serving Debbie Stabenow announced her retirement.

In the Upper Peninsula, well-known former television meteorologist Karl Bohnak won the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Jenn Hill for the House of Representatives 109th District seat.

In what some consider an upset, Democratic candidate Callie Barr defeated Dr. Bob Lorinser to challenge Republican Jack Bergman, who won his primary by a large amount, for the 1st Congressional seat.

Bergman beat challenger Joshua Saul by securing nearly 80% of the vote while Barr topped Lorinser, 58.5 to 41.5 percent.
