Scammers in guise as cops hitting area

Officials at the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office are reporting a new kind of scam, relatively speaking, that’s hitting the area.

Scammers are calling local residents in the guise of legitimate police officers.

To make things even more confusing, the phone number called from is often associated with law enforcement while the names of actual officers, or retired officers, are used.

The caller will claim they are holding a warrant for the victim’s arrest, often associated with failure to appear for jury duty or some sort of court date.

Victims are directed to a website for more information.

Sheriff’s office officials intone they would never ask for personal information over the telephone or direct anyone to a website where information is solicited.

In fact, police say if anyone gets calls like this, they should look up the number independently and call the person back to verify things.

Bottom line with this and all similar scams, don’t give out personal information out over the phone and don’t sent cash in the mail.

Be smart, don’t be a victim.
