The Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority is marking the retirement of outgoing trail administrator Carol Fulsher with a gathering today.
The public is invited to enjoy appetizers, beverages and cake at Velodrome Coffee from 6-7 p.m. tonight in Ishpeming for Fulsher's retirement party.
Fulsher became involved with the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in the early days of its creation and served as a board representative for two years before being hired as the first administrator in 2010.
Her retirement was announced in June by the IOHT.
"These hot days make it even more enticing to retire and ride my bike," Fulsher said in a Facebook post in June. "I'll be retiring at the year's end and today we announce that Bob Hendrickson, the current Ishpeming Negaunee Chamber of Commerce executive director, will be coming on board as the next trail administrator."
Fulsher's last day will be Dec. 31.
In an interview with The Mining Journal, Fulsher said, "I was so fortunate to land as the administrator of the IOHRA. I'd been a user and advocate of trails for many years as a cross-country skier and biker. Then add in the history portion of our local area, and it really became a passion project. I'm so lucky that Jim Thomas and Don Britton joined the mission. I learned do much from them."
Fulsher said that retirement will find her using the area's numerous trails by skiing, hiking, and biking.
"Maybe pickleball is in my future as well," she said. "And travel and enjoying time with friends and family."
In terms of her replacement, Fulsher said, "(Bob) has stepped in and taken over with his passion for trails and serving the community. He has already shown his abilities. He's hands on with maintenance by wading into the carp River his first or second week to remove logs. He's well known by the community for his trail knowledge. He's served as the chamber director do understands pleasing constituents. The trail is in really good hands."
Congratulations on your retirement, Carol. We speak for many avid users of the IOHT when we say, you have done a stellar job over the years, and we advise the public to turn out and show their appreciation to Carol at the event tonight -- she deserves it.
