Want to get educated? Try taking a walk in the cemetery

It’s an interesting way to learn about history: a cemetery walk. And this time, it’s learning about educators.

Therefore. we encourage everyone to go on the Marquette Regional History Center’s18th Annual Cemetery Walk.

MRHC has two walks scheduled for 1 and 6 p.m. Thursday at Park Cemetery in Marquette. Participants can meet at the cemetery’s main gates along Seventh Street.

“We alternate between Park and Holy Cross cemeteries so that we’re covering the entire community,” said Beth Gruber, research librarian at the MRHC, in a story that was published this week.

The theme this year is Educators.

“We’re focusing on people who were teachers, professors, librarians, people involved with education,” Gruber explained.

The 1 p.m. walk is a self-guided tour where people can get maps and walk at their own pace, she said.

“A lot of families like to do that because the kids can kind of not pay attention, run around a bit more,” she said.

The 6 p.m. walk includes guided tours as well as a seated tour for people with mobility issues.

“They can bring a lawn chair and sit, and somebody will read them the stories without having to actually walk around,” Gruber said.

The guided tour will involve three guides, she said — herself and two MRHC board members.

Walk participants will learn about the featured educators. One is Sarah Bottrell, a history teacher at Marquette Senior High School who lived to be 106 years old.

“A lot of people remember her, I think, in the community still,” Gruber said.

The other educator is Henning Anderson, whose career included being a chemistry teacher and principal at MSHS.

He taught high school chemistry and physics in Marquette from 1919-28 and was principal of Marquette High School from 1928-47.

He returned to teaching high school chemistry and physics at Negaunee High School from 1947-58.

There is a $5 suggested donation for the event. For more information, visit marquettehistory.org or call 906-226-3571.

Local history is fascinating. Go on a cemetery walk and you will agree.
