Time to welcome back Northern Michigan University students

If there seems to be more young adults in the area this week, there’s a good reason: Northern Michigan University students are returning to campus.

People might fret about the increased traffic and only an occasional (we hope) loud gathering, but for the most part, the community should be glad the students are coming back.

They add to the local economy by buying food, clothes and other necessities, just like “regular people,” plus they attend a variety of entertainment and sporting events.

Of course, they’re studying to advance their careers and, it is hoped, make significant contributions to whatever part of the world they move after graduation.

Students also volunteer in the area, such as participating in the annual Make A Difference Day in which student organizations rake yards throughout the day.

In other words, NMU students are an important part of our community.

NMU is getting busy to prepare for their arrival. NMU President Brock Tessman was to deliver his first fall convocation this morning in the Northern Center ballrooms.

Residence hall move-in is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with weekend check-in hours varying.

Monday marks the first day of classes as well as the annual Fall Fest. The event, held in partnership with the Lake Superior Community Partnership, will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the academic mall.

Students will have the chance to learn about the various organizations and departments on campus, as well as volunteer agencies and local businesses in the area.

Like many of not all college towns, students add a certain vibrancy to the community. Because the annual influx typically involves people in the 18- to 22-year-old group, these towns stay young at heart.

And for that, we are glad. The city of Marquette and surrounding area has a lot to offer its residents, and NMU students play an important role in making the community so appealing.
