Brasswire will be great addition to west end
Anyone who has ever visited western Marquette County knows there are not a lot of options when it comes to temporary lodging — especially in the Ishpeming and Negaunee areas. There is one hotel along with a small campground along U.S. 41, and there might be some short-term rentals. But these options can fall short, especially when there is a big annual events like the Ore to Shore, the Marji Gesick mountain bike race, Italian Fest and Negaunee’s Pioneer Days just to name a few. Hundreds of people come into town to attend these events, and that’s when a place to stay might be an issue for those who are visiting the area.
That’s why the Brasswire rustic campground in Ishpeming is such a great idea.
it offers a total of 50 campsites, and if recreation in the form of mountain biking is what you seek, the RAMBA network of trails runs right through the campground. There also is easy access to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and Teal Lake. So you don’t necessarily have to have a reason to pack up your bike and tent or trailer.
In fact Brasswire could very easily be its own hub of activity. The campground adds affordable lodging options for those who want to ‘rough it’ in the foothills surrounding the city of Ishpeming. You can pitch a tent or bring your trailer or sleep under the stars in a hammock for just $25 per night, that’s a great deal for those who are coming to the area on a budget. But don’t look for water or utility hook-ups at this point, because you won’t find them — but that just adds to the rustic experience in our view.
It’s also gratifying to see another project in which the state of Michigan and one of our Upper Peninsula cities work together to build a sustainable place for visitors to stay in the region.
The 16-acre campground was funded in part via a Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Grant. Kudos to those who came together to make this happen.
We have always believed that western Marquette County has a lot to offer. The Brasswire campground just makes it easier for people to enjoy all those amenities.
