Where we stand: Marquette area offers great weekend events

Are you thinking that now that the Fourth of July has passed, there is not much to do?

That’s not the case. Here are just a few of the things to check out this weekend.

The Skandia Lions Club welcomes everyone to Skandia Community Day on Saturday. The schedule: 10 a.m., parade participants to check in at Maple Lane Sports on Kreiger Drive; 11 a.m. parade proceeds down Krieger Drive to the Skandia Community Center. Parade judging for several categories. Plaques for first-third place; and noon food, beverages, music, kids games, adult games, raffle, tear-off tickets and most of all, community camaraderie.

For more information, contact club president Ron Stenfors at 906-942-7662.

Saturday is a Free Museum Day at the Marquette Regional History Center. What does that mean? It means everyone can get into the museum at no charge, courtesy of museum board member Chip Truscon.

Enjoy the museum galleries on this day, including the special exhibit “Exposing Photography: Anything but A Small Business” which follows the development of commercial photography in Michigan’s central Upper Peninsula.

The Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring St., will be open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for free. For more information, visit marquettehistory.org or call 906-226-3571.

Then Sunday is the annual Lake Superior Day celebration from 1-4 p.m. on the Marquette Maritime Museum grounds on the shore of the big lake.

This event is focused on providing fun activities for learning about the history, conservation, ecology, and regional importance of Lake Superior. There will be a variety of outdoor booths by local environmental organizations, tables, and family-friendly activities alongside activities specifically geared toward kids.

Lake Superior Day, which began in Thunder Bay in the early 1990s, was started to celebrate the body of water that dominates and defines the region. The goal of the Marquette Maritime Museum is to celebrate the greatest lake while showing how to preserve and maintain it for the enjoyment of future generations.

This is a free event as well.

We encourage everyone to get out to have some summer fun with these events, which are easy on the pocketbook but great for community spirit.

Starting at $3.23/week.
