Postal carrier effort an outstanding way to battle hunger

Saturday, you have the chance to be a hero because you can take part in Stamp Out Hunger, an event organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

To participate, all one has to do is bag healthy, non-perishable food items and place the bags by your mailbox. Your postal carrier will pick up your donation, which will be delivered to food banks and pantries in local communities.

Not sure what to donate? Pasta, cereal, oatmeal, canola oil, peanut butter, canned beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soup, tuna in water and pasta sauce are all good choices. Avoid glass containers.

The NALC has been spearheading this drive for years, with it taking place the second Saturday in May. Visit Facebook.com/StampOutHunger or @StampOutHunger on Twitter to learn more.

Please consider being a hero by taking part in Stamp Out Hunger. Too many of our neighbors are struggling to put food on the table.

The Food Bank Council of Michigan reports 1.1 million Michigan residents are food insecure, meaning they may not know when their next meal will be. That includes one in seven children, including a great many right here in Superiorland.

Those are statistics that should shock and horrify everyone.

We hope Yoopers will step up and donate, as donations stay in the community of the giver.

Remember, hunger knows no season.

Starting at $3.23/week.
