When one casually imagines a police officer on a roof top, some sort of dire tactical situation comes to mind.
But that's not the way it was last week in Marquette when area officers came together to raise money for the Special Olympics with a "Cop on a Rooftop" event.
Marquette's Dunkin' donuts is a sponsor of the Special Olympics, an international sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Locations throughout Michigan and the United States are hosting fundraisers to support their local teams.
Northern Michigan University Police along with Michigan State Police and officers from the Michigan Department of Corrections were stationed outside the coffee shop from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. visiting with customers and collecting monetary donations.
"It allows people who may not have advantages like others to play multiple different sports and law enforcement wants to help out with that, so that's why we're here," Northern Michigan University Police Officer Adam Maynard, said for a Mining Journal story on the matter. "It's a good cause. It's been a really good turnout today. A lot of donations and it's just fun to be out here with the athletes."
In addition, Dunkin employees donated their tips to the cause. Overall, $509.20 was raised for the local team.
Congratulations to all involved in this wonderful effort to support Special Olympics.
