Opportunity coming up to support local veteran

When someone who devotes their life to helping others finds themself in need of a helping hand, we should never hesitate to do the right thing. Marquette County residents will have an opportunity to do just that this weekend.

The American Legion Post #44 in Marquette is inviting the public to come out for a good cause Saturday when they host a fundraiser for United States Air Force Veteran Richard Jacobson.

Jacobson is a 15-year veteran of the Air Force who has had multiple deployments, including one in Iraq. Jacobson was recently diagnosed with a health issue that kept him away from his job and required his wife to take time away from her job to support him.

“He’s just a great guy. A 15-year veteran who has worked in the Western (Upper Peninsula), helping veterans with their issues,” said Post #44 Vice Commander John Mayotte. “It’s sad that the guy who helps everyone else now is the one who needs help. It was a no-brainer for us, we needed to do something.”

The fundraiser gets underway Saturday at 4 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. Local favorites Jim and Ray will be performing during the event. Food will be available, as well as a silent auction, 50/50 drawings, bucket raffle and a bake sale.

Mayotte phrased it better than we ever could — this is definitely a no-brainer. Jacobson is a man who, without question, deserves our support and on Saturday, we are able to give a little bit back to someone who approaches life in such a selfless manner.
