Historic structure destroyed by fire in Copper Country
We learned with a degree of sadness this week that a one of the Upper Peninsula’s notable historical structures was destroyed in a fire.
According to an account in The Mining Journal’s sister publication, The Houghton Daily Mining Gazette, the former home was located in Central Mine Location in Keweenaw County.
A fire of unknown origin razed the structure on Sunday.
The house, formerly owned by Central Mining Co. and recently owned by the Keweenaw County Historical Society, was leased by a private party at the time of the structure fire, the sheriff’s office report said.
The house was built with unusual construction features, which is among the reasons it was valued historically.
Central Mine Historic District member and Keweenaw County resident Scott Wendt posted on social media Sunday night that the house was located just down the hill from the turnaround, the Gazette story detailed.
“It’s never a good thing to get a call saying there is a structure fire in the ghost town of Central,” Wendt said on his social media account. “Your heart jumps right into your throat, for regardless of the building, it will be a huge loss for history; another unrecoverable piece lost to time.”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
We echo Wendt’s comments that the fire has inflicted real damage to the ongoing efforts across the U.P. to preserve its history.
