Never forget that war continues to rage in Ukraine

The image of Nila Zelinska standing in the ruins of what was her home, holding a doll, a toy belonging to her granddaughter, is a haunting shot taken by an Associated Press photographer.

Her sorrow is papable. Her pain is shared by thousands and thousands of her fellow Ukrainians who for the past 100 days have endured terror at the hands of the Russian army.

We in the USA are dealing with myriad troubles of our own, from gas prices to supply chain issues to the horror of mass shootings but we should still reach out to help the people of Ukraine any way we can.

Think about how it would feel to be Nila and her family. The AP reports the Zelinska family fled their home in a village near Kyiv when Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24. They returned this week to find their home in ruins, shelled by the invaders.

Mrs. Zelinska told an AP writer: “There is no place to live. If there was housing, we would return and plant a garden.”

That most likely won’t be happening anytime soon.

In her interview with AP, Mrs. Zelinska recalled escaping the initial fighting, bringing her 82-year-old with them on the way west, to safer territory.

“Everything was on fire,” she said. “I didn’t think I could get her out of there, because she is very old. But we grabbed her by the arms and began to run.”

Can you imagine having to do that?

In the AP story about the Zelinska family, there is one joyful note. Their dog Rex, who they had to leave behind in February, was found safe, tail wagging under its owner’s happy caresses.

Mrs. Zelinska sobbed when she and her husband returned to their village, Potashnya, to find their home was nothing but rubble.

She told the reporter what she wants.

“May there be peace on earth, peace so that our people are not suffering so much,” she said.

Let’s hope her wish comes true. Until then, relief efforts for the people of Ukraine continue. Visit www.americares.org/emergency-program/conflict-in-ukraine/ to find out more.
