Enough is enough: Action must be taken against gun violence

Another day, another mass shooting in America. Unlike the shooting in Buffalo earlier this month, which targeted elderly Black people, this one made elementary school children the target. Both suspects were 18-year-old males.

On Tuesday, the gunman slaughtered 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school barricaded himself inside a single classroom and “began shooting anyone that was in his way,” authorities said Wednesday in detailing the latest mass killing to rock the U.S., The Associated Press reported.

All of the victims were in the same fourth-grade classroom at Robb Elementary, Lt. Christopher Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The killer “barricaded himself by locking the door and just started shooting children and teachers that were inside that classroom,” he said. “It just shows you the complete evil of the shooter.”

Investigators identified the assailant as Salvador Ramos, who legally bought two AR-style rifles just days before the attack, soon after his 18th birthday, state senators briefed by law enforcement said.

The bloodshed was the latest in a seemingly unending string of mass killings at churches, schools, stores and other sites in the United States, the AP wrote.

Days before the attack, an Instagram account investigators say apparently belonged to Ramos posted a photo of a hand holding an ammunition magazine. On the day Ramos bought his second weapon last week, the account carried a photo of two AR-style rifles.

Dillon Silva, whose nephew was in a nearby classroom, said students were watching the Disney movie “Moana” when they heard several loud pops and a bullet shattered a window. Moments later, their teacher saw the attacker stride past the door.

“Oh, my God, he has a gun!” the teacher shouted twice, according to Silva. “The teacher didn’t even have time to lock the door,” he said.

If this story doesn’t cause you to feel complete and total outrage and sadness, we don’t know what will. These students went to school in the morning feeling safe, not knowing that they were anything but. Their parents dropped them off in the morning, not aware of the fact that it was the last time they would ever see their children. This is absolutely unacceptable and it is a problem which can no longer be ignored. “Thoughts and prayers” aren’t getting it done, and we can’t just gloss over this until the next tragic shooting takes place next week or the week after. The time for action has been long overdue. We should all let our elected officials know that we are fed up with the constant mass shootings in this country, and enough is enough. If our children cannot feel safe in school, we have failed them. We must do better, and we must do it today.
