It was one of the most important moments in Upper Peninsula sports history and anyone watching then remembers it now.
It is being celebrated this weekend, 30 years after it happened.
"It" is Northern Michigan University's NCAA Division 1 hockey championship, won 8-7 when the Wildcats' Darryl Plandowski scored early in the third overtime to defeat Boston University.
BU is the team coming to town to play the Wildcats at 6:37 p.m. today and Saturday at the Berry Events Center.
That plucky 1991 Northern hockey team will be honored at first intermission of Saturday's game and there will be a post-game party -- a fourth period -- at the Landmark Inn after Saturday's contest.
Boston University hasn't played NMU in Marquette since 1988, when Lakeview Arena was home ice for the Wildcats. Overall, NMU leads the all-time series 7-3-2, with the schools last squaring off in 2019. The Wildcats were victorious in that contest, 4-3.
Those going to this weekend's games are reminded that a mask must be worn by all individuals, vaccinated or not, whenever inside a school facility, including all indoor athletic venues. The only exceptions are for those actively eating or drinking.
Fans can follow the Wildcats and other NMU teams on multiple social media platforms -- @NMUHockey on Twitter, @nmu_hockey on Instagram, NMU Hockey on Facebook and @nmuhockey on TikTok.
Both games will be broadcast on radio station WUPT 100.3 FM The Point and online at streamdb7web.securenetsystems.net/ce/wupt.
Video will be available online at www.flohockey.tv/ and live statistics at nmuwildcats.com/sidearmstats/mhockey/summary.
We welcome the visitors from the East Coast to Marquette and hope their visit is great, except for the outcomes of their contests with NMU.
And we are also thrilled that the 1991 team is being saluted this weekend. The memory of their national championship run is special to anyone here who loves hockey.
That's a lot of us.
Welcome home, hockey Wildcats of 1991.
