Gilbert Elementary School student honored by company

It isn’t often we use this space to honor the individual accomplishments of very young students, but that’s what we have the pleasure of doing today.

That student is Gilbert Elementary School third-grader Ruby Derwin, the daughter of Sarah and T.J. Derwin.

It turns out that Ruby is among just a handful of kids ages 6 to 12 nationwide who have been selected to the Sun-Maid Board of Imagination after the company called for nominations across the United States.

More than over 1,300 applications for its first-ever board were received, a company press release states.

The kids, who submitted videos to the company for review and consideration, will work alongside Sun-Maid executives in a series of board meetings to influence and provide feedback for the company’s snacking innovations while learning about the brand and acting as Sun-Maid ambassadors to their schools.

In addition, Gilbert Elementary received a $5,000 check and a freestanding red locker that holds a year’s supply of Sun-Maid snacks on behalf of Ruby, who was honored at a recent school assembly.

It’s hard to find anything about this situation that isn’t positive. We salute Ruby, her family and Gilbert Elementary for jobs well done and look forward to getting updates.
