U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-1st District, along with state U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-7th District, announced earlier this week that they will formally object during the Electoral College certification process that begins today.

“Since Election Day, constituents have demanded Congress launch a full investigation into potential fraud and election irregularities and ensure election integrity measures are enacted,” the two said in a joint statement on Monday.

They said the “very foundation” of the nation’s democracy lies in the tenets of a free, fair and secure election.

“Americans deserve to know only legal votes are counted and reports and reports regarding irregularities, fraud and failure to follow election laws are thoroughly investigated,” Bergman and Walberg said. “Poll challengers have raised valid concerns about election integrity across our nation that brings into question the results of the 2020 election and puts faith in future elections in jeopardy.”

They mentioned as examples allegations that poll watchers and observers in Michigan, Georgia and Pennsylvania were denied entry to ballot-counting centers by election judges and other poll workers despite presenting proper certification.

Other examples, they said, included Republican poll watchers being forced inside confined areas — thereby limiting their view — in Michigan, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Bergman and Walberg said they joined with Senate colleagues in calling for an emergency electoral commission to perform an emergency audit of the election results in the 10 days before the inauguration.

We’re not sure what they expect such a commission to find. There has been no proof of 2020 election fraud — none.

Yet, this doesn’t seen to sit well with some supporters of President Donald Trump, who lost to Joe Biden in November in both the Electoral College and popular votes. And neither was particularly close.

Bergman and Walberg said in their statement that Congress has an obligation to the “tens of millions of Americans who have lost faith in our election process” to prove that the elections are free, fair and follow current laws.

We believe elections should be just those things, but we also believe the 2020 presidential election was, as far as we can tell, a law-abiding one.

Bergman and Walberg point out, accurately, that objecting during the certification process isn’t new. The latest objection took place in 2017 by Democratic members of Congress regarding the 2016 presidential election.

But even if there were minor missteps in state elections that may or may not have favored Trump, they almost certainly wouldn’t have made a difference in the outcome.

It’s time to stop prolonging the 2020 election. Like it or not, Joe Biden is going to be the next president of the United States.

The people have spoken. It’s time to move on.
