New sheriff’s department app will come in handy

Maybe the last thing you need on your smartphone is another app, but this one might be worth it.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office recently launched a new app to provide free access to local law enforcement information. The app is available on Apple IOS and Android mobile device platforms to replace the Mobile Patrol app the sheriff’s office previously used.

Sheriff Greg Zyburt acknowledged to The Mining Journal in a Tuesday story that the first app was limited in that the sheriff’s office didn’t have full control.

Now it does, which means information on the app is accurate — and outsiders can’t monkey with it. It gives the MCSO the ability to manage local content, including the current listing of Marquette County Jail inmates.

The app also provides information such as individuals on the “most wanted” list, sex offenders, jail information, agency programs, employment opportunities, and updates and news releases on COVID-19.

Besides satisfying curiosity and giving crucial information, the app has a practical side — drivers can receive notifications on bad accidents or inclement weather, giving travelers helpful information to make their trips safer.

In addition to submitting tipps, users will be able to access Facebook and Twitter as well as information to MCSO programs such as Life Tracker, a service for individuals who have conditions such as Alzheimer’s and might be inclined to wander.

Also on the app is the STOPPED program, designed to reduce the number of vehicle accidents involving drivers under age 21. The young drivers might not like that, but their parents might appreciate it.

Zyburt stressed the app still is a work in progress.

However, when it’s fully functional, and even before that time, we believe it deserves a spot on mobile devices.
