City commission should state why dark sky park is no go

Although it’s not entirely clear why, the concept of establishing what’s known as a dark sky park in the city of Marquette has apparently come to an end.

Members of the Marquette Astronomical Society have, in recent years, advocated in favor of such a park, which in essence, is simply an ultra-dark area where the evening sky can be more clearly observed.

Members of the Marquette City Commission seem to be in support of the idea. So did those members of the general public who voiced an opinion.

In addition, we used this space to offer our support for an idea that has no apparent downsides.

The park wouldn’t cost anything that we can see, no one is going to be inconvenienced and no city personnel would be needed to make the park work. And it’s hard to find a more conscientious and civic-minded group of people than the Marquette Astronomical Society.

So why hasn’t the park happened? We think it’s a reasonable question that deserves a reasonable answer.

We call upon the Marquette City Commission — they have ultimate responsibility for everything that goes on in town — to provide an answer.

If there is a reason the park should not be established — and we allow there may be — we’d like to hear it.

So would, we suspect, a lot of other people.
