It’s not too late. Heck, it’s never too late to do good.

Today is a special day for that, Spread Goodness Day, launched by local resident Anna Dravland, but reaching much farther than just Superiorland.

This nonprofit event inspires a global day of simple goodness by encouraging individuals, schools and organizations to show how a single act of kindness can multiply many times.

The simplicity of the event is just collecting people’s energy with one day to show how much they can change the world with their actions, Anna Dravland of Marquette, the founder of the event, told Staff Writer Christie Bleck in a story earlier this week.

“Once you get involved with it and you get exposed to it, you’ll see the value to the community,” Dravland said.

Locally, Spread Goodness Day has caught, with events planned throughout today, like the Pi(e) Smash 2020, which will feature pies thrown at local celebrities from 4 to 6 p.m. at Iron Bay Restaurant & Drinkery, along with the Peace Pie Company.

One especially heartwarming Spread Goodness event is from Connect Marquette which is doing an “Every Kid Deserves a Birthday Bash.” Connect Marquette has connected with the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum to gather donations and fill 100 bags of goodies with things kids need for a birthday party. The Salvation Army in Marquette then distributes them to 100 low-income families.

Haven’t Spread Goodness yet today? Dravland stressed that goodness can be spread in unique ways.

“To see people do it in their way is really cool because everything’s always more powerful when it’s natural for people,” Dravland said.

And you don’t even have to do good in public.

“At the end of the day, you can do it at home,” Dravland said in the story.

“You can think of how simple it is to maybe say, ‘Well, I can’t get out of the house. How can I bring a little more goodness into my home today?'”

Facing a global pandemic, small good deeds may seem a bit futile, but we know through experience, bringing a little light to others makes the world a better place. Even if it is by helping others to smile, one person at a time, it’s a way to brighten up the planet.
