Great Lakes makes best travel destinations list

We’d estimate that most people who live near any of the Great Lakes will attest the bodies of water are world-class travel destinations, easily comparable to any on the planet.

Now, apparently, a lot of people have come to the same conclusion. Travel magazine Travel + Leisure just named the Great Lakes as one of the world’s best places to travel in 2020, according to its annual list of the 50 best places to visit. The Great Lakes made it to No. 22, sandwiched between Guyana and Istanbul, according to a story in the Detroit Free Press.

Overall, the five lakes offer 11,000 miles of attraction-packed shoreline. There are new small ship cruises making it easier for visitors to explore, the Free Press reported.

The list includes Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (No. 1), Barbados (No. 6), Doha, Qatar (No. 16) and Singapore (No. 43), the Free Press story stated.

None of this, of course, comes as any particular surprise to anyone who lives on or near the lakes or visits regularly. The lakes offer stunning visitas, seasonal playgrounds and the cities that border them include a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Marquette comes to mind. So does the Houghton/Hancock area, Escanaba, the Soo and St. Ignace.
