Upper Peninsula football teams deserve our support

Upper Peninsula high school football fans will have an opportunity to watch two U.P. teams playing in the Superior Dome in Marquette in Michigan High School Athletic Association postseason action this weekend.

Tonight, in a Division 7 semifinal, the Iron Mountain Mountaineers host the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates at 7 p.m.

Many will remember the two schools had a memorable contest in the Division 3 boys basketball state final on March 16 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The game was hard fought and had a controversial finish, with the Pirates prevailing 53-52.

Tonight’s football meeting should be interesting, to say the least.

The victorious team advances to the D7 state final game at 10 a.m. Nov. 30 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Then on Saturday at 2 p.m., U.P. school Pickford will face Portland St. Patrick in the 8-player Division 2 championship game at the Superior Dome. Pickford was state final runner-up in 8-player Division 1 in 2018, while Portland St. Patrick was the runner-up in 8-player Division 2 in 2011.

The Division 1 final at 11 a.m. Saturday in the dome features downstate teams Suttons Bay vs. Colon.

We hope the Superior Dome is filled with not only fans from these particular schools but by high school football aficionados from around the area.

Let’s show that games featuring Upper Peninsula squads will draw support from the rest of the peninsula.

Time for some U.P. Power.
