Trenary Outhouse Classic a truly unique experience

The Trenary Outhouse Classic, which is running under the slogan, “Legend or Myth? You Decide…” will hold its 26th annual event on Saturday.

Festivities kick off at noon, and races will begin at 2 p.m., although attendees are encouraged to come out early for a Yooper-style outhouse tailgate party.

“We are getting a lot of positive feedback — people are excited,” said Mimi Cady, Trenary Outhouse Classic committee president. “They don’t care if it rains, snows or sleets; come anyway.”

For those who want to compete, registration begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and closes promptly at 1 p.m. Teams ages 17 and under will race first. They can register for $20 and those ages 18 and older register for $40.

Admission pins are $3 in advance and $5 the day of the races. Pins can be purchased at the at the Village Pub in Chatham, the New Moon Bar in Eben, the Shallow Inn in Gladstone, the Buckhorn, Barge Inn and Foggys in Munising, The Silver Dollar, Trenary Mini-Mart, Trenary Tavern and the Upper Michigan Community Credit Union in Trenary. Proceeds from the sale of admission pins go right back into helping the small town of Trenary.

Another activity is the Best Fur Hat contest, which will be held after the kids race. Participants need to meet in front of TJ Ryan’s Radio booth to be considered. The crowd will judge which hat deserves to win a cash prize.

“Legend or myth, come see it for yourself,” said Cady.

Saturday’s forecast is fairly clear for the afternoon, with a high temperature of 32. For those who have never been to the races, it’s a very unique event that needs to be witnessed with your own eyes; it’s definitely one of those things that every Yooper must experience at some point!
