Get all the facts first about Picnic Rocks Condos
Marquette’s been down this road before.
A developer wants to build condominiums and neighbors are upset.
It’s not unique to Marquette. People who live in and are happy about their neighborhoods like them for a reason and something that might change that in a perceived negative way often is met with resistance.
Lakeshore Park Place, a condominium complex located near the intersection of Lakeshore Boulevard and Fair Avenue in the city of Marquette, wasn’t welcomed with open arms when it was proposed.
People seem to be OK with the complex now.
There also was some consternation when condominiums at Founders Landing were built. Residents who lived nearby in the city were angry their view of Lake Superior was obstructed.
Point taken.
Another skirmish is underway. Lakeshore Residences LLC is the applicant for the proposed Picnic Rocks Condos, which would be built along Lakeshore Boulevard. The Marquette Planning Commission was to have taken up the issue at its Tuesday meeting, but it was removed from the agenda because the developers couldn’t attend the meeting.
Complaints from the public include the buildings being too high, too expensive and physically unattractive, along with causing congestion in the area.
The project involves several steps before a planned unit development is established. A final site plan would need approval from the planning and city commissions, followed by four public hearings.
Obviously, this will take some time.
However, an important thing to remember is this: Keep an open mind.
The cons already have been voiced on social media and publicly, but there are pluses as well.
One would be the additional tax dollars that would flow into the city’s coffers, which could benefit other projects and programs.
Another is the location. Although the proposed site for Picnic Rocks Condos is near the lake, it isn’t on the lake. It’s on the west side of Lakeshore Boulevard, not the fairly undeveloped east side.
That’s an important distinction.
Were the condominiums planned for the lakeshore itself, that would be even a bigger brouhaha, and rightfully so. Lakefront property is considered sacred in Marquette, with many residents wanting the remaining natural lakeshore to stay that way.
The community should wait to hear all the facts about Picnic Rocks Condos, and then, if needed, voice their opinions to the planning and city commissions.
Some fear more development could turn Marquette into “another Traverse City.” Marquette residents love their city, with its natural beauty often mentioned as the main reason. Its location along Lake Superior is a main attraction, for residents and tourists alike.
However, taking a wait-and-see attitude in this case is the right thing to do.
