Wildcats need our support for playoffs

As the weekend approaches, there is a small buzz surrounding the Berry Events Center at Northern Michigan University that our community needs to turn into a deafening rumble.

The No. 2-seeded Wildcats hockey team is set to face off against No. 7 Alabama-Huntsville Chargers in a best-of-3 series Friday, Saturday, and if necessary, Sunday.

This will be NMU’s first home playoff game since 2012, and we need to pack the Berry Events Center to the gills and give this team as much support as we can. After all, fan turnout can go a long way in deciding a win or a loss.

NMU is now ranked 19th in the country, and is tied for 16th in the Pairwise rankings. They have won nine straight games at home, and with our support, they can make that 11 and advance to the next round.

The theme for this weekend’s games is “white out,” and the first 1,000 fans on Friday and Saturday will receive a free white Wildcat shirt courtesy of Veridea Group and the Advanced Center for Orthopedics and Plastic Surgery.

“Hopefully, we can sell the Berry (Events Center) out,” NMU head coach Grant Potulny told The Mining Journal. “That’s the goal in the playoffs. It’s the most exciting time of the year and we’ve been very good at home. So hopefully we can continue to ride that and continue to build momentum and do it in front of our great fans.”

In regards to fan turnout, Potulny said, “if you look at the last three home dates, Lake (Superior) State, (Alaska) Fairbanks and then obviously Tech, they’ve been bigger every week.”

The Wildcats split both regular-season series against Alabama-Huntsville, winning the first game of both series and losing the second. The Chargers were one of two teams that has defeated Northern at home this season. Let’s do our best to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Tickets are available at all NMU ticket outlets. For more information, visit tickets.nmu.edu or call 906-227-1032. The ticket office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. until game time Friday and Saturday (and Sunday, if needed).
