Another successful U.P. Honor Flight goes into books

Applause and cheers echoed through the terminal of Reagan National Airport Wednesday as the 74 veterans taking part in Upper Peninsula Honor Flight made their way toward the gate holding the jet that would bring them home.

Some veterans were moved to tears by the spontaneous display from a group of several hundred strangers.

Imagine the veterans action if that kind of support came to them closer to home. Which it does through U.P. Honor Flight which completed its ninth journey to Washington, D.C., with a planeload of veterans and guardians who go along to make a vet’s day as perfect as possible.

Nearly 800 veterans have been taken, at no cost to them, to tour the memorials in their honor and other landmarks. These veterans come from all parts of the Upper Peninsula and have a grand time on the journey.

Mission IX marked the last journey for U.P. Honor Flight founder Barb Van Rooy and the crew who helped build the trip into something truly wonderful. We thank and salute them for a job well done.

Scott Knauf is taking over organizing the flight and we wish he and all the folks he recruits the best as they work on this important mission.

U.P. Honor Flight always can use donations from near and far. To find out more, call Knauf at 906-280-2871 or visit upperpeninsulahonorflight.org.

We, of course, must also thank the veterans for their service to our country. We hope Honor Flight shows you how much you are appreciated.
