Marvin Gibson sets shining example with Boy Scouts

One has to absolutely love Marvin Gibson, the Superiorland resident who made news this week relative to his work with Boy Scouts of America.

Gibson, who is from Marquette, was honored Sunday for 70 years of service to scouting.

“This is what it’s all about, it’s working with the kids,” a self effacing Gibson said.

We, and we trust many others, would go many steps further in describing Gibson’s service to scouting.

A front page story Monday noted that Gibson began his scouting career in 1945 when he joined the Cub Scouts -the BSA’s program for scouts in grade school – and worked his way up through the ranks to obtain Eagle Scout. Gibson then went on to serve as scoutmaster for Marquette’s Troop 302 from 1956 to 1974.

He continued to work with the organization since then.

When asked for Monday’s story what his favorite memory was over his 70 years of service, Gibson said, “Boy Scout Camp. … I went there 53 years on the staff without getting paid. It lasted six to eight weeks a year and my wife would become a widower around every June 1 or so and if she wanted me, she would just call out to the camp.”

We offer our congratulations to Gibson on his award. He’s a shining example of what’s right about Superiorland.
