Marquette girls softball team has great season

Congratulations go out today to the Marquette Senior High School girls softball team, which played in the state regional tournament this past weekend at Saginaw Valley State University.

The squad fell to a tough Lapeer team, 2-1, to end its season with an overall 28-7-2 record. It was the first time since 2011 that the team from Marquette had done that well, playing in the state regional tournament.

“We left every ounce of energy and passion out there on the field today,” said Marquette senior Courtney Finkbeiner, who played her last game in a Marquette uniform. “I couldn’t ask for a better senior year. This is such a positive team. I owe all my success to these girls.”

The Lapeer team fell to the squad from Midland, 4-3, ending its season, in a game that was played almost immediately following the game with Marquette.

Any time teams from the Upper Peninsula travel downstate to take on the various sports powerhouse schools it’s a challenge. And in some overall sense, U.P. teams generally acquit themselves admirably against these squads.

The Marquette girls represented their school and city well in Saginaw on Saturday, coming within an eyelash of moving on in the tournament.

Great job, ladies!
